Over the weekend, the NHL held their draft and on paper, it looks like the Thrashers had a decent draft. With the 4th overall pick, the Ice Birds took Evander Kane who is a 6’1” center who player in the Western hockey league last year. Despite being undersized Kane is a fiercely competitive player who loves to drive the net. Should he bulk up as most experts believe, he will be all the more formidable. Kane doesn't shy away from hits and pays the physical price to score. He is a great stick handler who can dazzle with dangles and dekes and is extremely dangerous coming off the wing. A great skater, Kane possesses a quick first and second stride as well as an extra gear. He is a noted clutch goal scorer and collected 48 goals and 96 points in 61 games with Vancouver of the WHL. The knock on him is that he should pass more. He might not start the season in Atlanta with the big club, but I bet we see him called up at some point in the season and he could be a great center for Kovy!
The Thrashers also took 8 other players in the draft and tried to fill some holes but most of these guys won’t see the ice in the NHL this year, they will be starting their pro careers in Chicago or Gwinnett. Overall, it seems that the organ“I”ization did a good job with their draft. In all of the analysis I have read the experts have scored the team with B’s, B+’s and A’s. Now they turn their attentions to Free Agency that opens on July 1st! I am looking for Waddell to bring in at least one big name!
