Wine Review – 2003 Jepson Estate Red Wine

Jepson Vineyards is located in Mendocino County in Northern California. It was founded in 1985 and they remain the sole producer of still wines, champagnes and brandies in North America. They try to produce wine and brandy that reflect the terroir of their vineyard. Jepson uses "sustainable agriculture" as an approach to grape growing that emphasizes ecologically balanced organic solutions to vineyard management. This philosophy minimizes the use of herbicides and pesticides and achieves a natural balance in the vineyards, resulting in crops of consistent high quality. This blend definitely reflects the rugged land and soil. It has a deep, intense, dark red color with fragrances of berries, tobacco and earth. It delivers flavors of plums, dark cherries, some pepper and cloves. This is a heavy Rhone style blend that sure to delight! It is made up of 94% Syrah, 4% Petite Sirah, & 2% Viognier. This would be great with a nice cut of beef, or a hearty soup or gumbo. The first time we had it we were eating a nice flank steak and it went perfectly! I was introduced to this wine through the California Wine Club and I have also seen this wine is stores around Atlanta. It retails around $18 and would be great for a cool night in front of the fireplace!

Cheers!
