Two great shows and a win!

Over the weekend, Meg and I were able to catch two drastically different but both great shows. On Friday, we went down to Little Five Points to catch Martin Sexton perform. It was cold and rainy but that didn’t stop the freaks from coming out at Little Five! They were having the annual Halloween festival and there were people walking around in costumes and face paint while listening to some heavy metal thrash band play on the stage in the heart of Little Five Points. Also since the BET Hip Hop awards were in town over the weekend, there was a big party on one of the boutique shops and there was a huge line to get in. So walking into the Variety Playhouse to see Martin was a nice contrast to the action outside the doors. Martin did perform solo and I am not sure why I thought he would have a full band, but he was still phenomenal! He has such great stage presence and a big booming voice that is like a choir of voices when he sings. It is pretty odd since he is just a little guy but he sings extremely big. His unique guitar playing also adds to the exceptional sound. It was a mellow show, that is just what we needed on a ugly Friday night after a tough week.

Then on Saturday, we went to see Widespread Panic rock the house at Lakewood Amphitheatre. This was the first time in 10 years that the boys have played this venue. I am not a huge Lakewood fan, but on Saturday things were all good! Besides being a lot cooler than I expected, the night was great! We got to hang out with good friends, see some people we haven’t seen in years and hear some great music all while being outside in the cool (cold) air! But the boys from Athens came out and warmed us all up. They played a solid first set with the highlights being One Arm Steve, Fishwater, Ain’t life Grand and ending the set with Ophelia. But they really got things cooking in the second set coming out with Chilly Water, Red Hot Mama and then busting out a song they have never performed before, their version of Randy Newman’s Mama Told Me Not To Come (it was made famous by Three Dog Night), followed by Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and closing the set with my sister's favorite, Tall Boy. The last four songs of that set had the Megablasters playing horns with them. That made the set even better! That blew the roof off the pavilion with that set! The encore was also rocking and they ended the show with Wondering. It was a great night all around!

Earlier in the day, the Dawgs won over the pesky comadoors from Vandy so that the festivities off on the right foot. I don't think the Dawgs looked that dominate, but they did what they had to do to beat a good Vandy team. Knowshon did have a great game and was just named the SEC Offensive Player of the week. He had 172 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries. That is not a bad day!

So to recap, we had a great weekend of music, football, family, friends, and fun! I want to thank my parents for taking care of our kids and my sister’s so she and her husband could join us for the show on Saturday. Even thought they had a rocky start to the day, the ended up having a great time as well. Weekends like that are why I love living in the south in the fall! Football, music, fun, nice weather (on Saturday), who could as for more?
