Big Win in the Bayou!

Well, the good news is that the Dawgs put up 52 points on the defending National Champions in their stadium. The bad news is our defense allowed them to score 38 points. A win is a win and I am not complaining, but I will say that if our defense doesn’t tighten up by next week, we could be the ones getting torched for 50 points. We face the hated Gators this coming weekend in Jacksonville at the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party!” I know that UGA President Michael Adams doesn’t like people to call it that, but that is just too bad. It will always be the Cocktail Party to me!

Anyway, LSU ran all over us last Saturday. They took advantage of our depleted “D” line and linebackers. They kept pounding the ball down the middle and eventualy broke some big runs on us. Florida doesn’t have a big bruising back like LSU does, so they might not take the same philosophy, but they do have speed on the outside and that will expose our poor tackling. But not to look ahead too much right now, I will do that later in the week. I think our defense did what they had to do to win. There were two interceptions returned for TD’s and they both game from the same guy, sophomore linebacker Darryl Gamble. For his efforts, Gamble was named the SEC Defensive Player of the week. He also had 13 tackles including a tackle for a loss. Even though Gamble had a great game, LSU was still able to move the ball on us at will. We will definitely need to play tighter defense next week against the Gators. The only problem is they have a lot more offensive weapons and will be harder to defend. On the Offensive side of the ball, I thought we looked stellar! Stafford had a great game and went 17-26 for 249 passing yards and two TD’s. Also, score a TD of his own by running in a Quarterback draw in the 4th quarter. Stafford did a good job of getting the ball in the hands of the big weapons we have on offense. Knowshon Moreno was named the SEC Offensive player of the week for the second week in a row and third time this season. He had 163 yards rushing and one touchdown on 21 carries. This was his 11th career game rushing for more than 100 yards. In addition to Moreno, the other big studs did a good job as well. A.J. Green and Mohamed Massaquoi both had solid games, as did our injured tight ends. Then some of our not so big studs had good games as well, for example, seldom used third-string fullback, Fred Munzenmaier, carried the ball for the first time this year and gets a touch down. You got to love the play calling from Coach Bobo. He did a good job of keep LSU on their heels.
So, I am very happy that we went into a very hostile Tiger Stadium and beat the 11th ranked and defending National Champions. That is a great boost for the Dawgs, but they need to keep this win in perspective. Yes we won, but we gave up 38 points! We aren’t going to win many games giving up that many points. I know Coach Richt is going to make this point and he has already taken action by having practice on Sunday. They usually take that day off to recover, but since we are playing the Gators this week, he felt like they could use the extra work.

I will do my part to fuel the rivalry by posting some typical Florida fans throughout the week. Be on the look out for those!

Go Dawgs!
