Yaz is back!
Growing up a child of the 80’s I had a lot of very different musical influences. Having two older sisters who also enjoyed music, they often turned me on to new bands and genres of music. Of course they listened to the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and The Doors. But they also introduced me to some of the not so mainstream bands like, The Violent Femmes, The Clash, and Yaz (they are known as Yazoo in the UK.) I remember my sister, Dawn, gave me the “Upstairs at Eric’s” cassette for my birthday. At first listen, I wasn’t sure what to think about the heavy synthesizer sound coming from this group. But since I was really into Howard Jones at that time, I thought I would give it another shot. It turns out, that is one of my all time favorite albums of all time! That album had the great songs like “Situation” and “Don’t Go.” Yaz was made up of Alison Moyet and synthesizer wiz Vince Clarke. They only put out another album before breaking up and moving on to other things, Moyet a solo career and Clarke joined up Andy Bell to form Erasure. The second Yaz album “You and Me Both” was good, just not as good as “Upstairs at Eric’s.” Well, apparently they are in the middle of a reunion tour (like alot other 80's bands) aptly called “Yaz Reconnected” and the reviews have been strong. They started in Europe and are now in the states with most of the stateside show being sold out already. Unfortunately, they are not coming to Atlanta. So, I guess I won’t get to see them, but I am glad to hear they are contemplating doing a new album. I wonder if it will still be all about the synthesizer? But what a blast from the past!
