OK, July 4th is just around the corner and nothing brings that home more that getting the
Peachtree Road Race number in the mail. Applications were sent in a couple of months ago and at that time the race seems so far away. In your mind you are thinking, “I have plenty of time to train and make this the best time I have ever had.” But life always gets in the way and you never get to run the miles you really need to in order to be in shape or ready for your best performance. At least, that is my problem. I was running so much more back in March and April than I am now. I just don’t have the time lately due to work, the kids and other obligations. So when I got my number in the mail yesterday, reality slapped me in the face! I have just over 3 weeks to get my lazy butt back on the road and pick up my training. To add more uneasiness for me, I got a number in time group 1A, which is just behind the seeded and sub-seeded runners. Those people are fast! How did this happen? I am not on that level! What the hell have I gotten myself into? ( I think that every year, even if I don't get a good number!)
Well, number packets for Time Groups 2 through 9 were mailed Friday June 6th; elite through Time Group 1 were mailed on Monday June 9th. If you haven’t gotten your number yet, it should be in the mailbox sometime this week! Meg is excited about her number, she is in the 3’s and our good friend Kelly is also very excited about her number. She got a time chip this year, which only goes out to the elite and time group 1 runners. That is an accomplishment in itself! Due to the current drought, the course has some changes this year. We will not be finishing in Piedmont Park this year; we will be finishing on Juniper St. and will have the meeting area at the Civic Center. Check out the new course
here. This will be the first year I have run (this will be my 9th race in a row) where we didn’t end in the park. It is just not going to be the same.
Anyway, for everyone who is getting a number, good luck and enjoy your last few weeks of training. The race is just around the corner! I just hope that race day is not as hot as it has been this week! It has been brutal!
