Wine Review – 2005 Stellenzicht Golden Triangle Shiraz

As the name might give it away, this wonderful South African wine is from the Stellenbosch region. This prestigious wine region produces the finest wines coming out of this country and the popularity of South African wines is growing quickly. The reason the wines from this region are so good is in the terroir. The rich mountainous soil along with the cool Atlantic winds help ensure the top quality grapes. Stellenzicht is located right in the heart of the Golden Triangle.

This award winning shiraz is a full bodied wine that is made from 100% shiraz grapes. It has a deep, dark red and purple color in the glass and has aromas of plums, herbs and mocha. On the palate, you will find tastes of smokey pepper, ripe red fruits, and dark chocolate. Also you might detect some oak which is due to the ageing in French-American barrels. This is another good example of the quality wines coming from South Africa. This bottle retails for between $20 and $25 and would pair nicely with grilled red meat or a spicy sausage dish.

Cheers!
