Wine Review/Value Alert – 2006 Frescobaldi Chianti Castiglioni
This Chianti is from one of Tuscany’s oldest estates. Chianti is a blend of several grapes from the Tuscany region with a majority (at least 70%) being sangiovese. I have become a big fan of Sangioveses lately and therefore I am trying more Chianti’s as well. This Chianti has an intense ruby color with lovely floral, big red fruit and a hint of spicy pepper on the nose. The body of this wine is not very heavy but not light either, it has a nice medium body and elegant in the mouth. There is good balance between the tannins and the acidity and you can clearly taste notes of black cherry and blackberry fruit. The finish is nice and luscious and leaves you longing for the next sip. The best thing about this Chianti, as with most Italian table wines, is its affordability. This particular bottle cost me $10.99, but I have seen it sold for more in other stores. It would go great with red sauce pastas, heavy cheeses and cured meats, as well as grilled meats. We drank it with pizza and they seemed perfect for each other. Since Chianti’s are quintessential Italian, they would go great with all types of Italian foods. Chianti’s are meant to be drank young so this would not age very well. I would not cellar this wine more than a couple months. So pick up a bottle or two today and drink them this weekend!
