Value Alert! The montepulciano grape is a close cousin to the Sangiovese grape and the DOC laws require that all of the montepulcianos must barrel age for a minimum of two years. The 2005 Masciarelli Montepulciano D’ abruzzo has a reddish-purple color and shimmers nicely in the glass. It is a light to medium bodied wine with aromas of spice and dark fruit. It is nicely balanced but not very complex with cherry and earthy tastes. It is slightly tart but not lip puckering tart. The finish is rather short, but you don’t expect a long drawn out finish from a grape such as this. These wines are meant to be drunk young and probably wouldn’t improve much over time. It would go good with most food, but especially pizza and pastas. We first had this wine at one of our local pizza joints and continue to order this wine every time we go there. In stores it retails around $9.99. This is a great Thursday/pizza night wine!
Cheers!
