Hollywood hits the snow starting on Jan 15th through the 25 when the Sundance Film Festival invades Park City, Utah. Overseen by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, the festival is the nation's top showcase for independent film. The 11-day festival includes 118 feature-length films and 96 shorts. From what I understand, the film committee is extremely picky when it comes to what is shown, as they have to narrow down the films to show from thousands of entries. This film festival is unlike any other, first of all it takes place in a cold, snowy city, which the other 50 weeks of the year is, a pretty sleepy mountain town in Mormon heavy Utah. Also, it allows the fans that are brave enough to face the cold and snowy conditions to rub elbows with some of Hollywood’s biggest and newest upcoming stars. (But I really question how much elbow rubbing is really going on!) This year’s festival will have a wide variety of full-length films and shorts. Usually the films tend to be a little edgier and risky, but that is what draws the actors to do the independent films and then to Sundance. Usually the big winners here go on to do well in other festivals and have pretty good success at the box office. It is interesting to see what comes out of Sundance and to see which stars show up to pimp their films or just to be seen. I just hope they take the time to enjoy the great snow they have gotten out there this year!
This is the place to see my thoughts on life and the world in which I live.
