Felton out as UGA hoops coach!

Well, I can’t say this blindsided me. I knew it was only a matter of time before Athletic Director Damon Evans was going to pull the trigger and let men’s basketball coach go. Coach Dennis Felton came to UGA in 2003 from Western Kentucky and he is known as a disciplinarian. He did a great job of cleaning up the program after Coach Jim Harrick made a total mess of everything! I think Coach Felton was the right guy for the job at the time, he did a great job of getting the riffraff out of the program. But he wasn’t able to implement a good scheme or coach up the players to their best of their ability. Coach Felton had an overall record of 84-91 with only one appearance in the NCAA tournament. He did lead an amazing run last year in the SEC Championship tournament to get the Dawgs in the big dance. Remember, the guys had to play two games in one day to win the tournament! But that wasn’t enough to save his job in Athens.
I am glad to see that Damon Evans wants to have a top-level basketball program and doesn’t only want to be known as a football school. Even though we actually win more championships in gymnastics, tennis, and swimming than we do in football. But I understand what he is saying. With the high school talent in the state of Georgia, we should be getting these kids in school and competing to win SEC Championship every year. Assistant Coach Pete Herrmann will lead the team for the rest of this season and Damon Evans is going to hire a search firm to help find a new coach for next season. I still think the boys from Athens can still put together a run and make a charge at the SEC title, but then again I better not hold my breath. Anyway, I think Coach Felton did what he was brought in to do and that he is a solid coach. I am sure he will land on his feet soon and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Go Dawgs!
