Chinese New Years! – Year of the Ox

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often called the Lunar New Year, especially by people in mainland China and Taiwan. Today is the first day fo the New Year on the Chinese calendar and according to that calendar, it is the year 4707. This is the year of the Ox! The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint. Interesting person that is an Ox is the newly sworn in President, Barack Obama. We will see if these traits hold true in how he handles the issues facing him and our country.

Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year and only twelve came. Buddha named a year after each one of the animals and announced that people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. Previous years of the Ox are: ’97, ’85, ’73, ’61, ’49, & ’37. There are going to be celebrations and a lot of dancing dragons and fireworks in Chinese areas today. Did you know that fireworks are suppose to scare off evil spirits! Anyway, I hope everyone has a nice Chinese New Year, even if you aren’t Chinese!

Happy New Year!
