Wine Review – Renzo Masi 2003 Chianti Rufina Reserva

This DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) Chianti has been produced by the Masi family for many generations. The Masi family winery is located in beautiful Tuscany and the grapes come from the best grapes in the Rufina region. This Chianti is made up of 90% sangiovese, 5% cabernet sauvignon, and 5% colorino grapes. It is very dark in color and has a concentrated nose with aromas of plum and berries. On the palate you get tastes of big fruit, including dark cherry and strawberries, a slight oakyness and some spice and pepper on the finish. This is a medium bodied wine that is pretty complex and really opened up nicely. It went well with our spicy sausage and spaghetti but would also go well with red meat and hearty cheeses. This is a pretty good deal as well with the retail price of around $14. It is a good safe bottle that is ready to drink now or could be aged for up to 5-7 years.

Cheers!
