Well, the first round of the Open Championship is in the books and most of the players would love to forget it! It was a cold, rainy and very windy day at Royal Birkdale. The conditions are so bad; there are only 3 players under par and 3 players sitting at even par. The rest of the field is over par with players shooting as high as 15 over! Rocco Mediate is one of the players under par and I am couldn’t be happier for the guy! After his tough one on one battle with Tiger in the US Open, most people thought he would disappear for the rest of the year. But he is back and proving that the US open wasn’t a fluke! Also atop the leader board sits Greg Norman. He is not even a full time pro anymore. He is more known for his businesses like his golf course design and wineries than he is for his golf. But he had a great round today. Maybe he is still flying high after his recent wedding to Chris Evert?
Most of the players didn’t have anything good to say about their round or the weather. Actually my favorite quote of the day comes from Pat Perez, he said; “I don't think it's golf at all, to be honest with you. I don't see it as golf. It's blowing 40 [mph]. My hands are so cold and everything is soaked. You can't hold on to the club. I don't see that as golf. They do here, but I don't.” Pat is the 54th ranked player in the world and shot an 82 today.
Meanwhile, Friday's weather sounds delightful. Rain at times, winds in the 25- to 35-mph range. But that's nothing compared to the drench fest they expect on Saturday. The official forecast: "Blustery showers, heavy at times … 25-30 mph, gusts to 35, perhaps 45 mph during heavy showers. Strong wind hazard." Have fun guys! I will love watching pros look like I do every time I hit the course, regardless of the weather.
