Big Sports Days (at least for me)

The past few days, there have been some great sporting events and I loved every minute of it! Of course the US Open was probably the biggest event and it was exciting and drama filled. Tiger had to make a 15 footer on the 72nd hole to tie Rocco Mediate and force an eighteen-hole playoff on Monday. That was drama in itself! Then the playoff went to extra holes where Tiger finally pulled it off on the 91st hole. What a great golf tournament! But that victory could cost Tiger the rest of the PGA season. Apparently he went against doctor’s orders and played this past week. He might have done more damage to the knee and could possibly be out for the rest of the season.

Also on Sunday, the USA Men’s Soccer Team played Barbados in the first game of the second round of 2010 World Cup qualifying games. They took it to Barbados fast and furious! They scored just 53 seconds into the game and set a new record for the quickest goal scored in a World Cup qualifying game. They went on to win the game 8-0, which is another record for the highest goal total for a World Cup qualifying game. They will play Barbados again this coming weekend but this time in Barbados. In addition, the Olympic groups have been announced and the USA team drew Group B where they will face Japan, Netherlands and Nigeria in the first round. This is not going to be an easy group to get through; all of these teams are extremely strong and the US has their work cut out for them.

Then last night, the UGA Diamond Dawgs played an exciting game against Stanford in the College World Series. It was a nail bitter, but the bullpen was able to hold it down and close out the Stanford Cardinal and win the game 4-3. Now they go to 2-0 in the CWS and will play the winner of the Stanford/Miami game on Friday. These are the same two teams they have beaten so far and in each game they had to come from behind in the late innings to win. I am sure it will be another exciting game!

Keeping it on the diamond, the Braves have started to finally play well on the road. After getting swept by the Cubs, they took two out of three against the LA Angels and then won last night against the Colorado Rockies. I hope they can keep this level of play up against the struggling Texas Rangers.

I guess I should mention the NBA Championship since I did watch the game on Sunday, but I am not really into the NBA right now. It was a good game and I am glad that the series will at least go 6 games and I feel like it will end there. The Celtics are just too strong for the one man show of Kobe. Game 6 takes place tonight in Boston and I look for the Celtics to finish off the Lakers tonight and finally end the entirely too long NBA season!

It was truly a great weekend to be a sports fan!
