Wine Review - 2007 Sherwood Estate Piont Noir

Sherwood Estate planted their first vines in 1987 in Marlborough, New Zealand. That planting contained several different varietals but now they are specializing in Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Sherwood Estate was founded by Dayne and Jill Sherwood and has become one of the most innovative winemakers in New Zealand using modern and technologically advanced equipment in their winemaking. This young pinot is barely a year old and could defiantly use some more time in the bottle. It has a darker color in the glass than most pinots and strong aromas of ripe plum and sweet cherries. On the palate it is a little heavy for a pinot and does have some edges. But after it opened up some, the tannins became smoother and gave it a rounder feel in the mouth. Since this pinot is a little heavier than most, it would go nicely with most meats and fish. It retails for $17.99 but is not easy to find in the Atlanta area. If you do run across some, I would let it age at least another 6 months or so before opening. That extra time in the bottle will go far.

Cheers!
