Well, this year’s Masters didn’t come down to the final put or even the finial hole, but it did have its fair share of drama. The eventual winner was Trevor Immelman from South Africa. This 28 year old has been on a major roller coaster in the last few months. One week he won a tournament in South Africa and the next week is he diagnosed with a benign tumor that was found in his diaphragm. This happened just four months ago and now he is the proud owner of the most coveted sports coat in the world. Immelman, lead the Masters from wire to wire and put together 4 solid rounds of golf even with Mother Nature throwing all sorts of things at him. There were 30MPH winds along with rain and fog delays. Not to mention there was a Tiger lurking! Trevor did a good job of keeping himself composed under the pressure knowing Tiger was in striking range, as were some others. But Tiger could never make the charge that we all expected. While other players like Snedeker, Flesch and Cink just seemed to take themselves out of the chase by making some horrible shots in critical times. Snedeker actually tied Immelman early in the round but seemingly let the pressure get to him and he played a schizophrenic back nine with 2 birdies and 4 bogeys. Cink could never make a charge and ended up even for the day, while Flesch was poised to really put the pressure on when he arrived at Amen Corner, then he hit is in the water on 12, which all but took him out of it! So Tiger got another second place by default. Trevor’s finial round was the highest final round score by a Master’s champion ever.
Here is Trevor Immelman getting his Green Jacket from last year's winner, Zach Johnson. Here are the top 5 finishers:
1 T. Immelman F -8
2 T. Woods F -5
T3 S. Cink F -4
T3 B. Snedeker F -4
T5 S. Flesch F -2
T5 P. Harrington F -2
T5 P. Mickelson F -2
Even though this years Masters didn’t come down to someone having to make a birdie to win, it was still very enjoyable. I like it when a story ends with a happy ending. Having been through a cancer scare this past year, I feel for Trevor and I very happy to see him win the Green Jacket. Seeing his family who has supported him and his dream from the age of 5, feel so much joy and happiness as he made the last putt really made me feel good. Trevor pretty much came out of nowhere, he was not a top player on the tour and no one knew his story, until now. He now belongs to a very elite fraternity of golfers and has solidified his place in history and no one can take that away from him now. Even if he never wins another tournament (which I don’t think will happen), he will always be known as a Masters Champion.
Nice job Trevor!
