OK, the Georgia Bulldogs have not had a great regular season on the basketball court. They were 13-16 going into the SEC Tournament. But they have done the unthinkable and are going to be playing for the SEC Championship against Arkansas on Sunday. It is not so much that a 6th seed is playing in the finals, even though that hasn't happened since 1992. But it is way the Dawgs have gotten to where they are now. They had to be Ole Miss on Thursday and they won that game in overtime. They were suppose to play Kentucky on Friday in the quarterfinals, but the tornado blew through Atlanta and the game was postponed until Saturday afternoon. So that meant that if the Dawgs were to get to the finals, they would have to win two games in one day. Something that has never been accomplished in the modern era! That didn't seem to scare the already depleted Dawgs team. They beat a decent Kentucky team in OT for the first time ever in the SEC tournament. That game ended close to 3pm on Saturday. They were able to shower, eat and rest for about an hour until they had to get back to the court to play the #1 seed in the western division, Miss St. The game tipped off around 8:30pm. It wasn't an offensive shoot out, but the Dawgs were able to keep it close for the entire game. Even with their two best players getting into foul trouble and eventually fouling out. They were able to keep their poise down the stretch and pull out a win. It was a really gutty game! This is the first time ever that a team has won two games in the same day. But the kicker might be that they won these two games on the court of their in state rival, Georgia Tech. If Georgia can pull out a win in the SEC finals, they will get an automatic bid to the big dance. Also, I think they might have more wins on the Tech court than the Yellow Jackets did this year!Even if the UGA Bulldogs lose in the finals on Sunday, they still will have shown great heart and determination. They are already playing without several of their opening day starting five due to injury or being dismissed from the team. So getting to the finials of the SEC tournament is incredible! I think they should get an invite to the NCAA tournament on that alone, but I doubt that would happen. So they really need a win. Anyway, March 15th, 2008 will go down in history not only at UGA, but in the NCAA's for a team winning two games in one day. That is just crazy and I still can't believe it happened. I would be amazed if it was another team, but since it is my team, I love it even more! The tornadoes really screwed up the city of Atlanta and the surrounding areas, but it also set the stage for some great drama and for the Dawgs to make some history. I just hope they can keep it going and they can win one more!
Go Dawgs!
