US Men's team won't be in London!

The U-23 Men’s National Team will miss out on the 2012 London Olympics after being eliminated from CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying in heartbreaking fashion following a 3-3 tie with El Salvador on Monday night at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. It was a crazy game that saw the U.S. take an early lead, fall behind by a goal and then bravely fight back to regain the lead, ended in incredibly dramatic fashion when a goal in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time gave El Salvador the unlikely tie.

With only four points from three Group A games, the U.S. finished in third place and missed out on the opportunity to play in the semifinals that will qualify two CONCACAF teams to the Olympics. This was the second time the U.S. has missed out on the Olympics since 1976, after having failed to qualify for the 2004 Games in Athens. (The U.S. qualified in 1980, but did not compete due to a boycott of the Moscow game.

Here are the highlights and low-lights of the game.

The roller coaster of a game had two goals by Terrence Boyd and one by Joe Corona and it looked all but wrapped up until a sort of a fluke goal by El Salvador in the finial minute of stoppage time tied it up. Like I said earlier, it was really a crazy game. The US jumped out to a quick lead and Boyd’s first goal just 59 seconds into the game. Then El Salvador had two quick strikes at minutes 35 and 38 which seemed to stun the US guys. It was a physical game that saw a lot of pushing and shoving and there should have been a red card when an El Salvador player clearly punched Terrence Boyd in the nose. Boyd was down on the ground bleeding and had to leave the game for a short period of time to stop the bleeding and change his shirt. This could have been a turning point in the game but once again, a missed call by a ref helps decide the outcome of the game.

So, there won’t be a men's team from the USA in the Olympics this summer, but at least the women have a good shot at gold!

GO USA!
