Kovy is out for weeks!

The Thrashers have come back to earth after a white-hot start to the season. They have lost their last three games and now are faced with playing at least the next 4 weeks without their captain and leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk was hit in the foot by a shot during the first period of the 4-3 loss to San Jose on Saturday night. The shot the took him out of the game happened early in the first period and once he left the game Thrashers first round pick Evander Kane was moved to the first line to replace Kovy. The entire Thrashers team will have to step up in Kovalchuk’s absence and one of the players that will be called upon is Rich Peverley. The forward has five goals and is tied with Kovalchuk for the team lead with 10 points this season. Also, Jason Krog was called up from Chicago to fill Kovy’s spot on the roster.

This is the first season where the Thrashers have some depth and I feel like they are going to be fine without Kovy. Don’t get me wrong, they might struggle scoring, but they have some guys that can pick up the scoring load and take on more of a leadership role on the ice. But as always, if we have good goaltending, we can win any game. The Thrashers take the ice for the first time without their captain on Thursday night against the Washington Capitals.

Go Thrashers!
