Wine Review- Raats Original Chenin Blanc 08

I stumbled upon this wine on our recent trip to the beach. The Raats Family Winery is located in Stellenbach wine region of South Africa. It is just east of Cape Town and this winery has earned top honors for its Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. We were sitting up on a rooftop bar enjoying the views of the ocean and the beautiful sunset when we ordered this wine. Since we were with a friend who was from South Africa, I decided to order a South African wine. I decided on the Raats Original Chenin Blanc based on the appetizer we had just ordered.

The wine is made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes and a splendid light green/yellow color. It had a nice apple and citrus aromas on the palate; you will get pineapple, citrus and a touch of ginger. The finish was crisp with a little mineral in the aftertaste. Our particular bottle could have been colder, but that temperature didn’t take away from the refreshing taste. It also we perfectly with our smoked tuna dip that we had as an appetizer. It will also go well with other spicy seafood dishes and oysters! This wine is meant to be drank young so I don’t suggest cellaring this for more than a couple of years.

Cheers!

Very nice review. This has become a staple in my home. The flavors of apple and orange blossom add great layers. Vibrant flavors to enjoy year round.
