Even though the nine-day festival of
San Fermin in Pamplona started yesterday, today was the first day to run with the bulls. There are celebrations all over Spain the most well known is in Pamplona. This festival is now attracting people from all over the world and is Pamplona’s signature event. Even though the event has been around for hundreds of years, it was made famous by Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises”. The running today was considered fast and clean by
bullrunning.com and there were only 4 injuries reported. None of which were from horn punctures (bummer). You can also go to this site to see a live
webcam of the Plaza del Catillo in Pamplona. If you time it right, you could see the bulls running through!
Here is a picture of the running on Tuesday.
This is a crazy event that I would love to experience one day. But as you can imagine, it also causes quite a stir in the animal rights communities. I do feel that bull fighting is cruel and I don’t know if I could ever attend a bullfight in person. But this gives the bulls a chance to get a little revenge on the people. Well, that is until they get into the ring and then they will eventually be killed. There are major protests that go along with the festival. That is why two days before the first “Running of the Bulls”, there is a
“Running of the Nudes”. That looks like an interesting event too!
