Pro Dawgs!

With the NFL Draft this past weekend, the University of Georgia was well represented. Not only did the number one overall pick play his college ball in Athens, there was five other players selected in the draft. Georgia players taken in Saturday’s first day of the draft included quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was the first overall pick by the Detroit Lions. He was followed by tailback Knowshon Moreno who was chosen by the Denver Broncos with the 12th pick of the first round. Wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi went in Saturday’s second round to the Cleveland Browns with the 18th pick and 50th overall selection. Then on Sunday, cornerback Asher Allen was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 22nd pick of the third round (86th overall pick). He was followed quickly by DT Corvey Irvin who was chosen by the Carolina Panthers with the 29th pick of the third round (93rd overall pick). Defensive end Jarius Wynn was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the 9th pick of the sixth round (182nd overall pick).

The five players taken in the first three rounds ties the record set by the draft classes of 2005, 2003, and 2001. The most Georgia players ever taken in a seven round draft is eight in 2002. Seven Bulldogs were selected in the 2003 and 2006 drafts while six were taken in 2009, 2005, 2001 and 1999. The six Bulldogs chosen this year bring to 46 the total number of Georgia players selected in the past eight NFL drafts. That is not bad!

There will also be several former Dawgs that will be undrafted signees and increase that total. I predict at least 4 possibly 6 more players. I wish those guys luck as well as the guys who got drafted. This cab only help the recruiting in Athens and I am sure the coaches will make a point of this while out on the recruiting trail.

Go Dawgs!
