Atlanta Thrashers left wing Ilya Kovalchuk, has been named the NHL's 'First Star' for the month of February. Kovalchuk led the NHL in goals (13) and points (21) in February as the Thrashers went 6-5-1 for the month. He recorded goals in nine of 12 games, including a season-high, six-game goal streak from Feb. 8-19 highlighted by his 11th career hat trick Feb. 15 against Anaheim. Kovalchuk recorded six multiple-point games, led by a season-high, five-point effort (two goals, three assists) Feb. 28 against Carolina. The 25-year-old Tver, Russia native has scored 18 goals in 20 games since being named Thrashers captain Jan. 11. He ranks seventh in NHL scoring with 71 points (34 goals, 37 assists) in 63 games.
Yeah, Kovy has been on fire and the team has been playing well. But I think it is too little too late for the Thrashers. They are still in the cellar in the Eastern Division and nowhere close to making the playoffs. Also, they just traded one of their top defenseman in Nick Havelid and released their 3rd or 4th line center in Eric Perrin. It seems they are giving up for the year, but yet they are playing the best hockey they have played in a while. If they keep winning, they are just going to blow our chance at getting a top 3 draft pick. So I am torn, I love to see them play well and win but I also know that if they keep this up, they won’t have a shot at Tavares in the draft next year! Oh what to do!
Anyway, nice job Kovy!
