Super Bowl XLIII & the commercials

Unless you live under a rock, you knew the biggest sporting event in the US took place last night in Tampa. The Pittsburgh Steelers won super Bowl 43 by the score of 27-23. It was an exciting game that came down to the last few minutes. It was truly a great Super Bowl and when my team isn’t playing, that is all I can ask for. The biggest play of the game had to be the catch by Santonio Holmes on a perfect pass by Ben Roethlisberger in the corner of the end zone. That will be on the highlight reels for year to come. But now on to the most important thing about the Super Bowl broadcast, the commercials! This year had some really good ads but overall I don’t think it was the best year for commercials. According to USAToday’s ad meter, the top 10 rated commercials were:

1) Doritos – Crystal ball sees free Doritos – 8.46
2) Budweiser – Clydesdale’s romance with circus horse – 8.42
3) Budweiser – A Clydesdale can fetch – 8.26
4) Bridgestone – Mr. And Mrs. Potato Head take a drive – 7.83
5) Doritos – Superpowers of Doritos’ crunch – 7.79
6) Cars.com – Cocky overachiever needs help buying a car – 7.78
7) Pedigree – Dog is better pet than an ostrich or rhino – 7.71
8) Pepsi-Cola – Mix of Forever Young with old and new images of Bob Dylan and Will.i.am – 7.65
9) Castrol – Grease monkeys and Castrol Edge keep car running smoothly – 7.56
10) Bud Light – Corporate bean counter proposes no Bud Light at meetings to cut budget –7.49

Those were all good but none of those were my favorites my personal top 5 is below:

1) E-Trade – Babies discuss “brutal” economy and breaks into song. I just love that E-Trade baby and then his little buddy just cracked me up singing Take these broken wings. 2) Pepsi-Cola – SNL’s MacGruber changes name to PepSuber. I love those skits and this one was right on par with the ones they do on the show. Also, did you catch the real MacGyver in the spot? Classic! http://www.nbc.com/super-bowl/commercials/video/clips/pepsi-pepsuber/982362/

4) Coke Zero –Steelers safety Troy Polamalu does his rendition of the Mean Joe Green classic. I liked the new twist on the old classic and I think those Coke guys are funny. 5) I have a tie for this spot and they are both job search companies. They are the Monster.com spot where the guy is sitting on the wrong end of the moose. I feel like that everyday! And the other is the Careerbuilder.com spot when they give you tips on when it might be time to start looking for a new job. I also feel like that most days!

I know everyone has his or her favorite and there were some really good ones this year, but overall I felt like this was not the best year for commercials. I guess the economic situation in our country keep some companies from advertising and for spending big bucks on the commercials that were made. Oh well, at least the game was good!
