The landscape of late night TV is changing as of tonight! Growing up, in my college years and even beyond, I loved watching the late night shows. Of course David Letterman set the bar for that time slot. I am referring to the 12:30am time slots. Once he moved networks and timeslots he changed some, not a lot, but some. He is still my favorite show that airs right after the local news. But the guy who took Letterman’s spot on NBC after the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, was Conan O’Brien. Conan came in blazing and did a great job filling the shoes of Letterman. His strange, off the wall sense of humor is very entertaining. But I knew I would like him since he used to be a writer for one of my favorite shows of all time, The Simpsons. Late Night with Conan O’Brien first aired in September of 1993 and will air its last new show tonight. Conan is moving to LA to be the host of the Tonight Show, formerly Jay Leno’s gig. Conan’s replacement on Late Night will be Jimmy Fallon from SNL. It will be interesting to see how he will handle filling Conan’s shoes. I don’t see him having the overall appeal that Conan had, but people said the same thing when Conan replaced Letterman.
I am glad that he is moving to an earlier timeslot, but now that means he will be competing with Letterman. What will I do? I am sure I will be doing a lot of flipping back and forth. Anyway, I am going to set my DVR (I am getting to old to stay up that late now) to tape the show tonight and I can’t wait to see the retrospect they will have covering the years on the air. As sad as I am to see this show end, I know there will be many more years of Conan ahead, just at an earlier timeslot. It will be interesting to see how all of these changes work for NBC, but the late night landscape is definitely changing!
