Inaugural Luncheon

Once the swearing in took place on Tuesday, there was an Inaugural Luncheon where approximately 200 guests attended including the new President, Vice President, members of their families, the Supreme Court, the Cabinet designees and members of the Congressional Leadership. They will have a delicious meal prepared by the White House Chef and his team. Also, there will be wine served! For their first course, which is seafood stew, they will be paring a 2007 Duckhorn Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc. Then for the main course of a brace of American birds – pheasant and duck, they will be pairing the 05 Goldeneye Pinot Noir. Goldeneye is the sister property of Duckhorn located in Anderson Valley California. Then for dessert, they are paring an apple cinnamon sponge cake with Korbel Natural “Special Inaugural Cuvee” California Champagne. I am sure the lunch was wonderful and the wines went nicely with the meal.

Wine has pretty much been a part of all administrations in the White House, wine and liquor services was only banned for the term of Rutherford Hayes. Wine was even served in the White House during Prohibition. Thomas Jefferson was the first President to have a wine cellar and he was responsible for stocking the first cellar during his term and did this for several presidents after him. During Lyndon Johnson’s administration, only domestic wines were served. This policy is still in place today.

You don’t have to be the President to enjoy these wines that were served today for the Inaugural Luncheon. I have seen Duckhorn, Goldeneye, and Korbel wines in several fine wine stores.
These particular bottles cost:

2007 Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc – $27.99

2005 Goldeneye Anderson Valley Pinot Noir – $55.99

Korbel Natural California Champagne – this was a special blend and not for sale in stores, but the Korbel Natural sells for – $24.99

Cheers!
