The other Dogs day!

Well, the UGA Diamond Dawgs had a good run and by far surpassed the expectations of everyone by getting to the College World Series. But they fell short last night in the finial game of the best of 3 series with a score of 6-1. They played Fresno St. again and those dogs were clicking on all cylinders last night. They had some incredible pitching (with some help from the home plate umpire) and some solid defense. They also had a good night with the bats but one guy, sophomore Steve Detwiler, provided all of the offense. Detwiler homered twice and drove in all six runs for the Fresno St. Bulldogs. Also, I guess it was fitting that he also caught the last out of the game that killed UGA’s final rally. Georgia who relied on their strong offense was only able to put 1 run on the board and that was a solo home run by the All-American Gordon Beckham. That home run tied Beckham with the national lead with 28. Beckham and senior Ryan Peisel were both named to the 2008 Men’s College World Series All-Tournament Team. Beckham finished the CWS with a .522 batting average (12-for-23) with two home runs, five RBI and seven runs scored. That is not bad!

I know the outcome makes the people at ESPN extremely happy. They were making me sick playing up the underdog theme and how tough and gritty the Fresno St. team was. But they were ranked in the preseason top 25, while Georgia wasn’t even in the top 50! They did have a tough road to maneuver to get to Omaha and some of their guys were dinged up, but give me a break. How many times do we have to hear about the guys torn tendon in his thumb or how big of a heart their third baseman had and how he won’t ever give up! It was a good story, but I was getting pissed how one sided the announcers were. I think if Georgia had won, they would have used all of the things they talked about as excuses and how they were just worn down from being on the road for 31 days!

With the win, Fresno St. becomes the team with the most losses that went on to be National Champions, their record was 47-31. “They’re a true champion, and they did it the hard way,” Georgia coach David Perno said. As a Georgia fan, I am disappointed at the outcome, but still extremely proud of this team. No one even had them on the radar at the beginning of the season. They played tough and won the games they had to. They have nothing to be ashamed of! Of course I would have loved to win another National Championship to go with the Gymnastics and Tennis Championships, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. Also, that just means we will have to win one in football. Which Georgia’s first game against Georgia Southern is just 65 days away!

Great season Dawgs, just not the last two games!
