Wine Review – 2005 Venta Mazzaron Tempranillo

This is a Spanish jewel! The Wine Advocate rates this wine a 91, but ratings don’t mean that much to me. There are so many different rating systems out there it is hard to tell which ones are spot on or just trying to get a kick back from the wineries. But in this case, it is spot on! This medium body wine is made from 100% tinta de toro grapes and is extremely dark in the glass. It has aromas of leather, dark berries and even some smoke. On the palate, you get hints of ripe fruit, coffee and even a little chocolate (that was a stretch for me) with a long dry finish. It went very nicely with our spicy tilapia and saffron rice and I am sure would be absolutely perfect for a good paella. I can’t remember exactly what I paid for it, but I found it listed between $12.99 and $18.99. I predict you could cellar this wine up to 10 years and it would be even better. It is one of the better Spanish reds we have had in a while.

Cheers!
