Port removal

OK, today is another big step in Meg’s recovery and putting the chemo behind her. Today, she will be getting her port (“port-a-cath”) removed. Since she is done with chemo and will not be getting blood drawn every 10 days or so, she no longer needs the port. The port did its job well. It really made things easier on her during her treatment and most of the doctor’s visits. Since the port was attached directly to her subclavian vein, they were able to not only inject the chemo drugs right into the port which went right into her blood stream, they also used the port to draw blood for her blood tests. This avoided the nurse having to poke and prod her arms looking for a vein. The procedure to remove the port should be pretty quick and she will only be sedated. I know she is going to be thrilled to no longer have it and it is one more step away from that nasty chemo!
